Title of symposium

Building a sustainable future for inland fisheries and aquaculture in a time of multiple stressors

The European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Advisory Commission (EIFAAC) promotes the long-term sustainable development, utilization, conservation, restoration and responsible management of European inland fisheries and aquaculture, consistent with the objectives and principles of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and other relevant international instruments, and to support sustainable economic, social, and recreational activities towards these goals through:

  • providing advice, information and coordination;
  • encouraging enhanced stakeholder participation and communication; and
  • the delivery of effective research.

We are pleased to announce the EIFAAC International Symposium and 32nd Session, which will be hosted by the Government of Croatia and University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture, in Pula, Croatia from 7-11 October 2024.

EIFAAC 32nd Session

(by invitation only)

EIFAAC Sessions are preceded by international symposia to facilitate interaction between European scientists and policymakers and to share inland fisheries and freshwater aquaculture research within the European region. The findings and recommendations of the Symposium are reported directly to the EIFAAC Session. This year the Symposium themes are:

  1. Stock assessment and freshwater fish management (stocking, habitat improvements)
  2. Migratory fishes – problems and conservation
  3. Exploring the use of artificial intelligence in inland fisheries and aquaculture
  4. Freshwater invasives networking for strategy (FINS III) –  see previous workshops: FINS I held in 2013 (Ireland) and FINS II held in 2016 (Croatia)
  5. Climate change and impacts on inland waters, fisheries and aquaculture
  6. Developments and challenges in freshwater aquaculture (technology, environment, economic and circular economy aspects)
  7. Advances in recreational fisheries research and management
  8. Innovative management for conservation of freshwater areas and aquatic biodiversity
  9. Citizen science and socio-economic aspects of freshwater fishery and aquaculture
